Kezia

Book of Job

Kezia is Job’s second daughter, born after his fortunes are restored. Though the account gives no separate actions or later history for her, it singles her out by name, includes her among her father’s notably beautiful daughters, and records that Job gave his daughters an inheritance among their brothers.

Identity and Family

Kezia is the middle of Job’s three daughters. Her sisters are Jemima, the eldest, and Keren-happuch, the youngest. The account identifies all three in the closing passage describing Job’s renewed household, but supplies no individual biography for Kezia beyond her place in the family.

Place in Job’s Restoration

Kezia’s birth belongs to the account of Job’s restored fortunes. After Job prays for his friends, God restores his prosperity, and Job’s household and possessions are renewed; he has seven sons and three daughters. The narrative names the daughters in turn, making Kezia’s name part of the final record of the family’s restoration.

Beauty and Inheritance

The account describes Job’s daughters as exceptionally beautiful among the women of the land. It also states that their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. This detail distinguishes the daughters’ place in the restored household: they are not only named and praised, but explicitly included in the distribution of family inheritance.
